Movement as Medicine
I was never a big exercise person. In fact, until recently I have never really liked to exercise. Even though my background is in Exercise Science, it always felt…. ugh. It always felt like I was trying to reach this standard of “healthy”. And I didn’t like that.
As I continued studying and intentionally building a strong sense of self-connection, I began to see exercise in a new light. We NEED movement. Not just to be healthy, but to feel a deep sense of connection and to help our bodies recover after illness.
From a sensory/nervous system lens, our bodies crave movement to regulate.
From a body systems lens, our bodies need movement to circulate fluids, encourage healing, and reach homeostasis.
From a spiritual lens, our bodies need space and movement to connect and communicate with us.
From a mental and energetic lens, our bodies release hormones during movement that boost mood and energy.
Movement doesn’t have to be strict, boring, or painful. Movement can be anything you want it to be. It can be dancing, swimming, walking, or playing.
Movement is your medicine to feel better and more connected.
As you move forward with this week, I want to encourage you to move your body in whatever way that feels good. I’ll leave some of my favorites below in case you’re looking for something new.
My current favorite is Pilates with Melissa Wood Health. Her positive energy and outlook on consistent movement are so supportive of my message here. Movement is medicine for your mind, body, and spirit. And when you practice doing it mindfully… *chef’s kiss*
Yoga is always a wonderful go-to as it naturally movement for your mind, body, spirit connection. I’ve been using Yoga with Adriene’s videos for years and highly recommend.
Walking is our human nature. So get outside and find a wonderful trail. If you’re in the Seattle area, I recommend the Snoqualmie Valley Trail. Breath in the fresh air and feel the sun on your face. It’s a beautiful world out there.
